Israel’s religious court sentences dog to death
An Israeli religious court has sentenced a wandering dog to death by stoning, believing the hapless hound to be the rebirth of a famous secular lawyer who insulted the court’s judges 20 years ago, news agencies report on Saturday.
According to reports a large wandering dog entered the Monetary Affairs Court near Mea Shearim, an ultra-orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem, and spooked visitors there. The dog refused to scram, even after staff tried to shoo him away.
A judge in the court remembered the secular lawyer from back in the day and how the panel of judges cursed him and wished his spirit would enter the body of a dog. Dogs are considered impure animals under Halacha, the Jewish law. That lawyer died several years ago.
One judge still held a grudge, and used his powers to sentence the wayward dog to death by stoning. He commanded children from the neighborhood to carry out the execution, but luckily the dog’s luck flipped and he managed to escape.
“The death sentence was ordered by the rabbis because of the grief he had caused the court,” Rabbi Avraham Dov Levin, the head of the court, told reporters
